Skiathos friends ...

Met quite a few these last few weeks ...

Yesterday Saturday morning, I net up with 'Gentleman John. Or as we like to say 'Mr H' As usual he was a busy man, and who isn't at 6am, on a fresh autumn morning?

Mr H is preparing himself for his Autumn sprint to the rock. Here are some photos shared with Skiathos taverna owners yesterday, of his fish course ...

Ο τζον είπε ότι θα φέρει τα ψάρια, μπορείτε να αρχίσετε το μαγείρεμα το τσιπ ...
John said as he is bringing the fish, can you start cooking the chips ...

The Halibut weighed 20kg, the same as your holiday suitcase. I kept him holding that for quite a while, and he had a few choice words to say after :) ...

Afterwards, we went out back to see another fishy friend. One who according to Rex (Nigella's fishmonger) has been there for 20 years ...

Well the seal, certainly has a passion for a fresh Mackerel (Kolios) breakfast, served up by Mr H ...

I left with some excellent squid, which is now in the freezer, and as Skiathos friends will know, Its September which is 'fresh squid time' back on the rock.

When you have the now darker evenings, the squid boats can be seen offshore, with their huge over water lamps, attracting the squid to the surface - and a fresh calimari portion, to a taverna table near you.

Soon the Skiathos trawlers will depart once again, for the fishing grounds. Returning with shrimps, prawns, langoustines etc fresh to the island tables and kitchens ...

This was part of my catch yesterday, the Squid was fried with butter and olive oil, by SWMBO. Take it from me they were delicious ...

The prawns were huge, there is something about time spent preparing them. It fiddly, its messy but if you take your time, its very therapeutic, and your efforts are rewarded.

Once cleaned they were fried slowly in some butter and olive oil, along with some crushed garlic, and chopped coriander ...

Then flambeed in some ouzo - try it, but don't burn the house down, in the process ...

My 'Prawns Ioannis' - "Service - table one" ...

Good to see Mr Malcolm, had met up with Pelle yesterday. I am missing the tsipouro club ...

Autumn equinox ...

Shiver me timbers ...

The days are shorter than nights from now on ...

Skiathities are celebrating with some rain, to help a little with the olive harvest. Skiathian is celebrating with a food parcel, delivered by hand by Skiathos friends, who popped in for coffee a few days ago ...
\

One bar of the excellent Pavlidis chocolate, and a packet of the oregano crisps, have departed this world, and gone to a far better place ...

A quick scan of the Skiathos news - 'Cats, Dogs, Rats, Weather, and be nice to airport numpties' - It must be September ...

Mr Malcolm is back on the rock, and there have been a few tantalizing glimpses, of his social whirl online. Meanwhile I am suffering third world ISP problems but am trying to keep in touch ...

Thoughts with friends on Skopelos, who one year ago suffered the season ending storm of the century.

PS If @PaulHollywood finally follows the girls and quits #GBBO will someone remember to ask him to turn off the oven, and the lights when he leaves. Looks like the execs at C4 will be asking urgent questions. It appears they have bought rights to an empty tent - Apparently the tents not under contract ...

Whats the weather like ?

A question often asked ...

Now if I was a betting man, you could hedge your bets on changeable ...

That's the storm that has arrived from Italy, leaving a trail of destruction on the Ionian islands. By the time it crosses the mainland it should be a showery few days ahead. However the forecast for Tuesday is good.

For the best Skiathos forecast - look out of the window - then look again ...

Amazingly, three of the ship’s crew – Lt. Eleftherios Tsoukalas, the ship’s executive officer, and petty officers Antonios Antoniou and Anastasios Tsigros – managed to swim to the shores of Skiathos, which was an epic feat taking them nine exhausting hours. They hid on the island until they eventually managed to return to Egypt, to rejoin the Greek fleet.

The submarine was named after the 18th century Greek naval hero Admiral Lambros Katsonis who built up a small fleet in order to begin harassing the Ottomans in the Aegean Sea.

Cappuccino, or flat white ...

So this morning, I am in a coffee shop ...

Its Friday - Is the usual Mums meet up day, and its busy. Young mum, arrives with buggy/baby looking for some room, so I move from Sofa to adjoining small table for her. A little while later she is discreetly feeding junior (No problem).

Huffing, puffing, tutting and clucking on the next table is an OAP, I thought she was going to lay an egg. She looks at me, points at mum and says out loud "That's disgusting should not be allowed" ...

Young mum, now very embarrassed, and its all gone very quiet.

I said, "I have just sat next to you, listening to you drink a cappuccino with no teeth - At least he is using a straw" ...

Permanent summer - Now there is a thought ...

Turkey has abolished changing the clocks, onto winter time, and introduced permanent summer time.

The clocks were to have gone back one hour on 30 October when Turkish summertime officially ends. But after the decree, published on Thursday, there will be no winter adjustment.

The decree, which comes into force immediately, was aimed at “making better use of daylight” during the winter period.

The decision means Turkey will be three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in winter as well as summer and two hours ahead of continental Europe in winter.

Now there is a thought ...

Carlo - Carl Phillips ...

Sad news to share ...

Reports circulated yesterday, of a sailor missing at sea, and a search being undertaken by the Volos coast guard, in the area of Trikeri. http://magnesianews.gr/

'Unfortunately  It seems that the missing person is Carlo, who has been missing  for the last 36 hours, He was at sea, when he went over the side, to untangle a rope, and failed to re appear.

The search by Volos port police is continuing, and so far this morning, nothing has so far been found'
Source: Bob George‎ - Skiathos Island News

Carlo will be known to many people on the harbour, in Skiathos. from his time working on the boats.

We often bumped into each other, over the years, It often cost me a beer. In Volos where he always told me he was the unofficial harbour master.

When my wife was in hospital in Volos, he introduced me to his Volos 'Greek family' in case I needed any help.

Thoughts are with his family and friends, and hoping for better news ...
